We strongly recommend that you and your student pick a book from our Book List below and read it together over the course of the program. You can read the book during and outside the tutoring session, if agreed on. During the tutoring session, you can spend time working on:
Fluency (tutor can read aloud!)
Vocabulary
Reading Comprehension & Discussion of characters, plot, and themes
Writing & Grammar
Midtown Reads Book List:
Call it Courage by Armstrong Sperry
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Pax by Sara Pennypacker (recommended review)
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Does your student only read Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Read this review and you may both realize there are better books to read…

Renaissance STAR Assessments
Follow these 7 Steps to get your student started on his STAR Math or Reading Assessment:
Send your student to bit.ly/MidtownSTAR
Ask Mariano or Pedro for your student’s login credentials, and have your student log in
Confirm accuracy of your student’s grade level (if inaccurate, tell Mariano or Pedro ASAP before taking)
On homepage, click on STAR Reading or Math tile
Tell your student to select “Yes” when asked “Are you inside your school?”
Enter “admin” as Monitor Password when prompted
Begin assessment!
Keep in mind…
Tutors CANNOT help students. You may be present, making sure he stays focused on assessment. You may work on the questions simultaneously and separately on a scratch piece of paper for moral support. Calculators NO; Scratch paper YES.
5 practice questions. These will appear at the beginning and get the student warmed up.
35 computer-adaptive questions. Your student will see and answer 35 questions which vary from student to student depending on how accurately he answers as he goes along.
20-25 minutes. The assessment is timed (about 90 seconds per question) and shouldn’t take more nor less than this amount.
Reports. Tutors will be able to access their student’s assessment reports after completion using their (tutors’) log-in.
If you need help at any point, ask Pedro or Michael.
To access assessment reports, login with your credentials, which Mariano should have provided via email.
