1% Better

1% Better

Some days we all feel unprepared and those are the days where it's easiest to think, "I could have used my time better yesterday." Yes, that is probably true, but if we stop our thinking there we are missing the essential motivation to change how we work today. After we acknowledge the effort we lacked yesterday, let's think, "How can I be 1% better today?" 1% of the 1440 minutes in a day amounts to a little less than 15 minutes. What can you spend 15 minutes on today that will help you be ahead of where you were yesterday? Rather than looking for a bleak future, frame the present in a positive way that encourages you to work hard now. The young woman in this article is a great example of perseverance in academics and life.

The American writer and intellectual Henry David Thoreau suggested that you have a moral responsibility for your government; that when the government does something wrong -- say, handing out "free" small-pox infected blankets to Native American Indian tribes -- that it's not right to simply blame the government, because by extension that government belongs to you and acts on your behalf. So the blame belongs to you as well. What would you do if you lived in a place that had the lottery?
